Job Description

Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, Government of India invites online applications from eligible candidates to fill the vacant posts of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDSs), Branch Postmaster (BPM)/ Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)/ Dak Sevaks in different offices of the Department of Posts.

Name of the Post and Number of Vacancies Advertised:

Branch Postmaster (BPM): The department manages marketing, promotions, and various customer services at its Customer Service Centres (CSCs). In single-handed Branch Offices (BOs), Branch postmasters (BPMs) bear full responsibility for the smooth operation of the office, including mail conveyance and delivery. In BOs with multiple staff, BPMs may receive support from Assistant Branch Postmasters (ABPMs). BPMs are required to undertake ABPM duties when directed or when ABPMs are unavailable. Additionally, they may be assigned other tasks by superiors such as Mail Overseers (MO), Inspector Post (IPO), Assistant Superintendents of Posts (ASPOs), Superintendents of Post Offices (SPOs), and Senior Superintendents of Post Offices (SSPOs).

 

Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM): Sale of stamps/stationery, conveyance and delivery of mail at doorstep, exchange the mail with account office, etc. deposit/payments/other transactions of IPPB.
To assist BPM in postal operations in a manner as prescribed by the Department from time to time. 
Marketing and promotions of products and services being provided by the Department and operating various services in the Customer Services Centres (CSC) of the Department etc.
ABPM may also be required to do combined duties of the BPM as and when ordered or in case of non-availability of BPM in addition to his/her regular duties.
Any other work assigned by superiors like MO/IPO/ASPO/SPOs/SSPOs, etc.
 

Dak Sevak: Sale of stamps/stationery, conveyance and delivery of mail at doorstep, deposits/payments/other transactions of IPPB, and any other duties assigned by Postmaster/Sub Postmaster.
Dak Sevaks may have to work in sorting offices of the Railway Mail Service (RMS).
Dak Sevaks in the Mail offices will handle receipt-dispatch of mailbags, transshipment of bags, etc.
Dak Sevaks will also assist Post Masters/Sub Postmasters in managing the smooth functioning of Departmental Post Offices and do marketing, business procurement or any other work assigned by the Post Master or IPO/ASPO/SPOs/SSPOs/SRM/SSRM, etc.

Remuneration:
BPM: Rs. 12,000-Rs. 29,380 per month
ABPM/Dak Sevaks: Rs. 10,000-Rs. 24,470/- per month

Age Limits: Candidates must have attained the minimum age of 18 years and must not have crossed the maximum age of 40 years as on 16-02-2026. However, relaxation in the upper age limit is applicable as per government directives.

Educational Qualification:
Educational qualification for engagement of GDS is a secondary school examination pass certificate of 10th standard with passing marks in mathematics and English conducted by any recognized board of school education by the Government of India/State Governments/Union Territories in India.
 

Other Qualifications:
i. Knowledge of computer
ii. Knowledge of cycling
iii. Adequate means of livelihood

Selection Process: Candidates will be shortlisted for engagement based on a system-generated merit list.

What is the application procedure for GDS positions?

  1. Registration:
    • Register on the GDS Portal indiapostgdsonline.gov.in.
    • Use a valid email ID and mobile number; duplicates will be disqualified.
    • Keep Aadhaar (if available), 10th exam details, scanned photo (≤50 KB), and signature (≤20 KB) ready.
  2. Payment of Fee:
    • Rs. 100 fee for all except female, SC/ST, PwD, and Transwomen applicants.
    • Pay via Credit/Debit card, Net Banking, or UPI.
  3. Online Application:
    • Apply for multiple posts but will be offered only one.
    • Ensure correct preferences before submission.
  4. Document Upload:
    • Upload documents in the prescribed format.
  5. Application Correction Window:
    • A 3-day window for modifications after the deadline.
